De la foi aux lumières

Every December 8, the people of Lyon carry on a tradition born in 1852: lighting up balconies and windows with small candles, in tribute to the Virgin Mary. This religious custom, marked by a solemn procession from Saint-Jean Cathedral to the Basilica of Fourvière, remains at the heart of Lyon’s identity.

But since 1999, this centuries-old tradition has taken on a new dimension. It is now intertwined with the Fête des Lumières, a media and tourist event that has become a must. For four days, projections and artistic scenographies bring the city’s monuments and landmark sites to life, attracting millions of visitors every year who come to admire this unique show.
