In Brittany, the sea remains a link between past and future. The Grayhound is a living illustration of this: a replica of a 1776 privateer lugger based in Douarnenez, this three-master carries local products under sail to Northern Europe. Heritage, ecology and short supply chains meet on board, embodying a new way of trading. But beyond the ship, it is a shared human adventure, driven by the crew’s cohesion.
In August 2025, a cargo of one ton of wines, ciders and spirits left Finistère on board, bound for Amsterdam. The crew, joined by volunteers, took up the route of the old coasters. Every evening, the ship dropped anchor at emblematic stopovers: Ushant, the Sept-Îles archipelago, Paimpol. These stops, between heritage and encounters, recall Brittany’s intimate bond with its coasts and islands.
At the crossroads of memory and innovation, the Grayhound shows that another kind of maritime trade is possible. Heir to Breton traditions and a pioneer of the ecological transition, it charts a course where the slowness of the wind once again becomes an asset for the future.
