In the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud, shock prevailed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, as life gradually resumed. From one street to the next, traces of the battle follow one another: destroyed buildings and burned-out stalls, military weapon casings lying on the ground, and a few unexploded drone charges. Syrian civil defense vehicles are busy clearing away the wrecks of burned vehicles and the debris littering the roadway, fallen from bombed buildings.

Between January 6 and 10, these neighborhoods in northern Aleppo were the scene of violent clashes between the forces of the transitional government in Damascus and Kurdish brigades of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The United Nations estimates that in just a few days, 148,000 people fled the fighting to shelters in other neighborhoods or outside the city. At least 24 civilians were killed and 129 wounded during this episode, while 276 residents are still reported missing.

This event was the starting point of Damascus’s military offensive against the AANES (Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, also called Rojava or Syrian Kurdistan), aimed at fully subduing the SDF and restoring the central government’s authority over the entire territory.
