When people think of the southwest coast, beaches, dunes and waves are the first things that come to mind. Yet behind this tourist facade lies a more discreet reality: that of a constantly evolving marine ecosystem that scientists have been studying in Arcachon for more than 150 years.

The EPOC laboratory (Environnements et Paléoenvironnements Océaniques et Continentaux), based at the Arcachon marine station and affiliated with the University of Bordeaux and the CNRS, is at the heart of this scientific quest. From the Arcachon Bay to the Gironde estuary, by way of Lake Hossegor, a team of oceanography researchers observes and studies changes in the environment and the evolution of benthic organisms.
