Birds are disappearing. In Europe, a quarter of species have died out since 1980, and up to 60% in the countryside, according to a study by the CNRS and the University of Montpellier.

This study is confirmed by the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO) in the Rhône department, which reports a rapid collapse. In 10 years, the Eurasian tree sparrow, for example, has practically disappeared.

In Lyon, two cemeteries have become “LPO refuges.” These places of burial are thus given another purpose. By increasing the opportunities to host biodiversity with wild spaces, nature and wildlife are reclaiming their place. Pesticides are banned, nest boxes and insect hotels are installed, ponds are created.

The LPO also uses these sites to raise public awareness with outings, observations and talks. Individuals are encouraged to create refuges of their own in their gardens or on their balconies, and to adopt appropriate gardening methods.
