Becoming a mechanic for a day: that is what participatory, community-based garages offer, such as SelfMeca-Concept in Brest.
These new kinds of workshops are springing up in cities, in response to the growing number of motorists who want to repair their own vehicles. The principle: you rent the lift and the necessary tools by the hour to do the repair yourself, with advice from a professional. Customer profiles are very varied: from the student who “doesn’t have enough money to do otherwise and follows a YouTube tutorial”, to the forty-something “who is fed up with being ripped off by unscrupulous mechanics”, or young women who want to learn to do it themselves “in a spirit of pride and emancipation”.
