He sees there a country still little covered, a society under tension and perhaps a revolution to come. Barely arrived, he takes two pictures deemed impossible: Marguerite Yourcenar, just elected to the Académie française and sheltering far from the media frenzy, then Bob Marley, who no longer lets himself be photographed but welcomes the reporter into his home thanks to an unexpected misunderstanding.

This opening says a lot about Patrick Chauvel: his instinct, his ability to be in the right place, his taste for the field and that rare mix of nerve, luck and journalistic sense that marks great reporters. In the profession, his reputation is already established: when he arrives somewhere, even if nothing is happening, something ends up happening.

After Jamaica come Cuba, the Miami riots, El Salvador marked by the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero, then Peru and the violence linked to the Shining Path. Through these accounts, Patrick Chauvel documents a Latin America shaped by revolutionary promises, social fractures, repression, poverty, armed struggles and the hope of a freedom often paid for at a high price.

As in his other narratives, the author does not merely recount events. He focuses on the men and women he met in the field, on those who take up arms, on those who suffer from them, on those who risk their lives and sometimes those of their families for a cause, a promise, an idea or a necessity.

Camera in hand, Patrick Chauvel bears witness to what he sees, as close as possible to the fighters, the civilians and the turning points of history. The exception, precisely, gives the narrative its title and its strength: that day in Peru when the patrol he is following falls into a Shining Path ambush.

Les pompes de Ricardo Jesus is at once a book of long-form reporting, an adventure story, a testimony on the 1980s and a dive into the life of a reporter confronted with the chances, dangers and contradictions of the field.

This book is for readers passionate about photojournalism, war reporting, contemporary history, Latin America, field accounts and the literature of reality.

Why read this book?

To discover a narrative by senior correspondent Patrick Chauvel.

To dive into the 1980s, between Jamaica, Cuba, Miami, El Salvador and Peru.

To understand the Latin America of revolutions, guerrilla wars and uprisings.

To follow the behind-the-scenes of a story in Jamaica, from Bob Marley to Marguerite Yourcenar.

To better grasp the work of a war reporter in close contact with the field.

To read a testimony on fighters, civilians and revolutions.

To rediscover Patrick Chauvel’s direct, lively and embodied style.

To enrich a library devoted to photojournalism and long-form reporting.

Who is this book for?

This book is for readers passionate about long-form reporting, photojournalism, war journalism, contemporary history and Latin America.
