Synopsis :

En 1985, la station thermale d’Epecuén, en Argentine, disparaît sous les eaux après la rupture des digues censées la protéger. En quelques jours, la montée du lac envahit les rues, les maisons et les hôtels, forçant des milliers d’habitants à fuir.

Si des précipitations exceptionnelles sont à l’origine de la catastrophe, celle-ci s’inscrit dans un système hydrologique complexe propre aux lagunes de la pampa. Epecuén, lagune endoréique sans exutoire naturel, constituait un cul-de-sac où l’eau ne pouvait ni s’écouler ni se réguler autrement que par l’évaporation, la rendant particulièrement vulnérable aux variations climatiques. Des aménagements inadaptés, des protections insuffisantes et une confiance excessive dans la maîtrise du milieu ont transformé un phénomène naturel en désastre durable.

Aujourd’hui, Epecuén n’est plus qu’un paysage de ruines blanchies par le sel, figé dans le temps. Une ville fantôme dont les traces subsistent dans les structures, les objets et les souvenirs. Norma Berg, ancienne habitante devenue guide touristique, se remémore ce territoire disparu, et explore ce qui reste d’une vie collective effacée. Elle interroge ainsi les limites du contrôle humain face aux forces naturelles.
